Our Afterschool Program includes structured activities such as arts and crafts, cooking and Scout Reach. Children are also free to choose to engage in less structured activities, such as board games and socializing. We also have a computer lab available to the children to work on homework that is supervised by Joyful Harvest volunteers and staff.
We provide the 2-hour Afterschool Program for students each school day. This includes 15 minutes for a healthy snack, one hour of creative play supervised by adult volunteers and 45 minutes of working with students on their schoolwork. Valuing children, youth and families, we believe that our work makes a profound difference in the lives and families of those who take part in our programs. Through providing a safe place with caring relationships, structured activities, educational support and opportunities for service, leadership or team work; there is development of self-confidence and self-esteem, a positive, healthy outlook on life.
Our Solomon’s Society is a program that encourages children to take an active part in their academic growth through parent and student contract; providing space; set aside time; five on line computers, supervised by adults for safety at all times and assistance as needed to complete homework assignments and study. Our contract with students and parents helps both identify responsibilities and hold each other accountable. Parents may request to be notified if their child does not take part that day or homework is not completed. A release is also offered to parents so that teachers can communicate with workers at Joyful Harvest when questions are raised or a teacher wants to remind students about test or special projects.
We have held leadership classes for teens as well. These classes focus on positive life choices and giving back to the community. Teens are then asked to serve as peer mentors to younger children.
The after-school program is open to all children and youth in Biddeford and is free of charge. The 2009-2010 afterschool program ends on June 11, 2010. We will close for a short break but look for information about our summer program.
